Akkale: Upon conquering the region, the Roman Empire appointed Archelaus I (36 BC-AD 17), the king of Cappadocia, who had previously accepted Roman rule, as governor of the region. Accordingly, it is understood that the ruins date from the 1st century. However, the Mersin University Department of Archaeology believes that the site was a place of accommodation for sailors. The ancient harbor settlement is located very close to the Lamos (Limonlu) River, which forms the eastern border of the Eastern Mountainous Cilicia region and is located at an important point, economically and strategically. Numerous remains recovered from the settlement indicate that it was established as a harbor settlement and developed within this framework.
